Founded in 1953 by Karl Wlaschek, it began as a discount perfume shop named WKW (Warenhandel Karl Wlaschek). In 1961, the company was rebranded as BILLA, an abbreviation of "billiger Laden," meaning "cheap shop" in German, marking its transition into the food retail industry.
In 1996, BILLA became part of the German REWE Group, one of Europe's largest retail and tourism corporations. Today, BILLA operates nearly 1,300 stores across Austria under various formats, including BILLA, BILLA PLUS (formerly Merkur), BILLA Corso, and the plant-based concept store PFLANZILLA. The company employs approximately 33,000 people in Austria, making it one of the nation's largest private employers.
